LiteSpeed™ Engine for SQL Server® allows for seamless data compression and encryption without having to
modify existing SQL scripts.

The LiteSpeed Engine solution consists of two parts, which are both installed by default:
l File driver component—This does the actual work of compressing and optionally encrypting your SQL
Server database backups. It works by intercepting the backup file stream and compressing the results
before reaching the actual physical disk. If restoring a database, the operation is reversed, the file
stream is decompressed before reaching SQL Server.
With each backup, LiteSpeed Engine generates an .lsi file in the same directory as the SQL Server
backup file. It has the same name as the backup file, but is appended with the .lsi file extension. This
file is used to map backup information and optimize restore times. If it is deleted or otherwise
unavailable at the time of restore, the file will be regenerated using information contained within the
backup file.
l Configuration Editor—This is a UI application that, among other things, allows you to determine what
SQL Server backup files (based on their extension) are going to be compressed and/or encrypted.
Once installed and configured, the driver will work transparently in the background, compressing and
decompressing and optionally encrypting and de-encrypting your SQL Server backups and restores.

Compatibility with LiteSpeed for SQL
Server
LiteSpeed Engine for SQL Server is a complementary technology to LiteSpeed for SQL Server (LiteSpeed). By
providing LiteSpeed’s compression and encryption functionality in a driver based solution, you can continue
using native or third party backup tools, while getting the full advantage and flexibility of LiteSpeed’s time and
space saving features.
LiteSpeed for SQL Server is a fast and flexible backup and recovery solution that allows database administrators
to easily maintain complete control over the backup and recovery process. LiteSpeed's low-impact, highperformance
compression and encryption technology helps reduce storage costs and protect data, while
maintaining a high level of recoverability.
A LiteSpeed Engine backup can be restored with either LiteSpeed or LiteSpeed Engine.

LiteSpeed™ for SQL Server allows DBAs to easily maintain complete control over the backup and recovery
process. It provides an enterprise view of the backup and recovery environment as well as flexible backup
and recovery options, including file attachments to backups, restoration of individual database objects, and
simplifying of data migration to any SQL Server. Additionally, the low-impact, high-performance compression
technology in LiteSpeed enables users to reduce storage costs, as well as SQL backup and recovery windows.
LiteSpeed’s backup engine compresses data up to 95 percent—and takes less than half the time required by
other backup solutions. It speeds up restore times by up to 70 percent, and includes the ability to recover
individual database objects. This powerful solution also offers an easy-to-use interface, scripting backup
and recovery commands via T-SQL, or a fully functional command line executable. Plus, LiteSpeed allows for
enterprise-wide deployment and upgrades through its remote installation capability.

LiteSpeed for SQL Server Features and Benefits:
Backup Analyzer: Allows users to test different LiteSpeed parameters and different backup locations. Every
environment has different challenges and the Backup Analyzer lets users expand the tuning capabilities with
just a few clicks.
Advanced Compression: Identifies additional compression points within the database. This reduces the size
of the backup file without impacting performance.
Encryption: Offers nine embedded encryption levels that are applied to data concurrent with the
backup process.
Database Categorization: Categorizes databases according to user specifications (PROD, DEV, TEST). It also
allows user defined categories with the ability to choose desired global views.
Centralized Reporting: Supplies efficient, centralized reporting. Users can avoid checking each server one
by one for backup failures by creating a single report for backup failures, throughput and compression rates.

Double-Click Restore: Allows users to create a database backup file that can be restored simply by doubleclicking the backup file. Users can create portable backup files and further reduce restore times in a disaster
recovery scenario. LiteSpeed is the only SQL backup solution to offer this feature.
Log Shipping Management: Allows users to easily configure and monitor both LiteSpeed and native log
shipping plans. The ability to visually monitor log shipping includes all relevant latency alerting and lets users
easily add and remove subscribers on demand.
Log Reader: Recovers data stored in transaction log files by rolling back any operation and reconstructing
transactions. Users can view and browse the online transaction log as well as LiteSpeed and native T-Log backups.

Object Level Recovery: Allows users the flexibility to restore individual objects from LiteSpeed and native
backup files. Users can restore tables, schema and rows.
Attached File Backup: Enables users to attach relevant documentation to their database archives. Attached
files can be restored by themselves or along with the database as part of the recovery operation. LiteSpeed
is the only SQL backup solution to offer this feature.
Backup Mirroring: Allows users to write a single backup to multiple locations simultaneously, eliminating
the need to make copies individually. LiteSpeed’s backup mirroring is available on both SQL Server Standard
and Enterprise Editions.
Row Level Recovery: Restores data down to the row level by incorporating SELECT statements into the
recovery process, returning only the data users need from their backup files.
LiteSpeed Maintenance Plans: Lets users craft maintenance plans with all the options of the native tool,
plus the power of LiteSpeed, regardless of how simple or complex the plans are.
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Integration: Schedules jobs and builds maintenance plans that can write
directly to TSM without the need for an additional agent
